
“Metamaterials” are artificial materials with not only a designed composition but also a designed molecular structure. As such, they display behaviors that are completely unknown (at least to common experience), even opposite to what is usually expected. In the refraction of light, in electrical and thermal conductivity, and in many other “physical phenomena,” metamaterials appear to overturn the established certainties of what one expects from solids or liquids…
This is a cutting-edge research branch (“physics of new materials”) that has not yet unfolded the spectrum of its practical applications. And perhaps many of these will never be perceived by outsiders, that is, the large mass of citizens – who possess increasingly less knowledge even about things they use daily.
On the other hand, this very material “metabolism” will contribute in a fitting way to the establishment of a mass metaphysics, even regarding the materiality of the world. We assume this won’t distress many: “magic,” even when highly capitalist, remains manipulative…
