surveillance and silence (absolute in both cases) Have the guardians of human rights and privacy been lost here? Or perhaps they never existed at all? Have the anti-authoritarian people of the movement been lost?
In the media of last December, the "security authorities" officially announced that they would monitor the communication apps Viber and WhatsApp - which are widely used both internationally and in Greece. Officials even traveled to London to be trained in using the relevant software. ... As if nothing was said, as if nothing is happening...
But something is happening indeed! We are reproducing excerpts from one of the related publications, already from last autumn:
“In mid-October, the world’s largest messaging platform, WhatsApp, began sending warnings to selected users, informing them that the security of their communications had been breached. These warnings were sent after security researchers discovered that an Israeli company was supplying security authorities in various countries with software specifically designed to target WhatsApp users.
Once a device is hacked, all data on the mobile phone becomes accessible to the spies. Anything stored on the phone—whether emails, other communication platforms, photos, or files—can be accessed by the agency using the Israeli software.
... Since August 2016, Citizen Lab, a research laboratory at the University of Toronto, had been investigating the development of spyware by the Israeli NSO Group. By August 2018, it had gathered evidence showing that citizens and networks from 45 countries had been targeted by NSO Group’s spyware. The lab even identified the name of the program: Pegasus.
... The outrage that followed was comparable to that caused by Edward Snowden’s revelations about the operations of the U.S. NSA. Pegasus differs from other surveillance software in that it offers absolute and uninterrupted control. Even if the infected phone is factory-reset, Pegasus continues to operate. And that’s not all. The software steals usernames and passwords from other sensitive accounts used by the compromised device. The full software is priced at $8 million, with an annual service fee of $1.8 million. ... The data indicates that the state agencies using NSO Group’s software do not have full control over the data stored by the Israeli company. It is highly likely that the company itself uses its clients for its own purposes.
... Among its clients are the USA, India, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Thailand, the UK, Ghana, Brazil, Kuwait, and Pakistan...”

And Greece, too, obviously. The typical willing response in our parts is: “I’m not doing anything illegal, so they’re not watching me.” Not just childish - absurd, with a capital A! For several reasons. Primarily because it's obvious: state services don’t monitor “criminals” that way... They already know them. They monitor the dissenters!
Why was the category of “thought crimes” created? To legitimize the surveillance of thought - especially that part of it which is digitized. And what do companies like NSO Group do? They provide the technical capability for this kind of surveillance by state or para-state will. In this way, the “boundary of legality” constantly shifts - openly or not - to the right, in favor of the state and its masters.
“You’re not fighting for anything” and you’re still a target! Well then, start doing something, and make sure you stay unplugged!!!
